Felicity Kendal's Heartfelt Journey: Coping with Grief After Partner's Death (2026)

Felicity Kendal's Three-Year Grief Journey: A Reflection on Loss and Resilience

Felicity Kendal, the beloved actor known for her role in The Good Life, has opened up about her three-year grieving process following the death of her partner, Michael Rudman. In an interview with Prima Magazine, Kendal shared her insights on how grief can transform one's life and the importance of focusing on the positive memories.

Rudman, a theatre director, passed away in April 2023 at the age of 84, after a battle with health issues, including a heart attack, bypass surgery, Covid hospitalization, and a broken back. The couple, who had a son together, Jacob, lived together for over three decades, never remarrying after their divorce in 1991. Kendal's grief journey began with a period of intense emotion and self-reflection.

"I mean it has been three years now, so it’s moved from being really all-consuming," Kendal told Prima Magazine. "Even though you try not to show it, it sort of takes over every aspect of your life – missing that person that was part of your everyday. So the everyday changes."

Kendal's words highlight the profound impact of grief on one's daily life. The first year of her grief journey was particularly challenging, leading her to question her own value and purpose. "You think, ‘I’m of less value because I’ve only got half of me’ and then you realize you have a chance now at another life and you have to have a different routine," she explained.

A turning point for Kendal came when she considered her sister's death. "She’s not here, so I better not waste this," she thought, and this mindset has guided her through her grief. Kendal emphasizes the importance of focusing on the wonderful times shared with Rudman, rather than dwelling on the sadness.

"I think that’s what I’m now feeling. And it’s just about remembering the wonderful times rather than the sad times and that does happen. It’s a three-year journey," she said. Kendal's resilience and determination to move forward are inspiring, especially her refusal to accept the label of being 'lost' without her husband.

"It’s as if you have lost the cat. I haven’t lost Michael; he is dead. We are all at one point or another going to have to deal with similar things, so let’s be open about it," Kendal stated. Her words reflect a deeper understanding of grief and a desire to normalize the process, encouraging others to embrace the journey and find meaning in their own ways.
